Description:

Native to South Africa and loved around the world, this charming plant goes by many names—variegated money tree, Tricolor jade, or Crassula ovata variegata—but whatever you call it, it’s pure joy in plant form. With its thick, spoon-shaped leaves striped in creamy white and soft green, this jade blushes pink in bright sun, giving it a sweet, almost candy-colored look. Slow-growing but wonderfully long-lived, it can stay with you for decades up to 70 years and eventually mature into a beautifully branched shrub up to 3–6 feet tall, making it a true heirloom plant.

In late winter to early spring, mature plants may surprise you with clusters of tiny, star-shaped flowers in white with soft pink tones—like a delicate finishing touch. Even when not in bloom, the variegated foliage steals the show year-round. Traditionally considered a symbol of wealth and good fortune thanks to its coin-shaped leaves, this jade is said to bring prosperity wherever it grows.

Care Guide

Light
Thrives in bright light and looks its best with plenty of sun. Ideally, place it in bright indirect light with a few hours of direct sun, especially morning or late-afternoon sun. Adequate light keeps the plant compact, enhances the creamy variegation, and brings out the lovely pink blush along the leaf edges.

It can tolerate lower light, but growth will slow and the variegation may fade to mostly green. In very intense, all-day hot sun—especially outdoors or in south-facing windows—some light protection may be needed to prevent leaf scorch. For indoor growing, a south- or west-facing window is usually perfect, or supplement with a grow light if natural light is limited.

Water
During the growing season, which is typically spring and summer, you can water your plant every 2-3 weeks. In contrast, during the dormant period in winter, you'll want to reduce watering to once every 4-6 weeks.

Soil
Use a well-draining soil mix (like cactus/succulent mix with added perlite) and a pot with drainage holes to help regulate moisture naturally.
