Dense, needlelike spines in hues of white, beige, or gold often branching columnar cacti. The 49 species are widespread in most South American countries. Between spring and autumn, most of these sun-loving, fast-growing plants produce masses of small scarlet, orange, green, or golden flowers, usually from the top of the stem. Perfect plants for beginners or ideal for hanging baskets.
