ECHINOCACTUS PLATYACANTHUS
Habitat: Mexico
Description:
Echinocactus platyacanthus, known as the Giant Barrel Cactus, is one of the largest barrel cacti, reaching heights around 2.5 m and widths of 1.5 m in cultivation, with some wild specimens exceeding 3 m. This long-lived cactus can thrive for over 100 years. Young plants are powdery blue—sometimes with purple streaks—and have white wool at the top with reddish spines. As they mature, their stems turn solid green, develop up to 60 or more prominent ribs, and bear stout, dark spines.
From late spring through summer, mature plants produce vivid yellow, funnel-shaped flowers from their woolly apex, often blooming repeatedly and lasting several weeks. In addition, they form oval yellow fruits.
Recognized for its resilience to heat and drought, it’s a superb choice for water-wise landscapes, rock gardens, and container plantings, offering striking structure and colour throughout the year.
