ECHINOPSIS ANCISTROPHORA SUBS. ARACHNACANTHA
Habitat: Bolivia and Northern Argentina
Description:
Echinopsis ancistrophora subsp. arachnacantha is a striking, compact cactus known for its dramatic dark red—almost black—body, which is beautifully contrasted by fine, white to brown spidery spines. Its name, arachnacantha, is derived from the Greek for “spider-web spines,” a fitting tribute to its unique and intricate appearance.
This clumping cactus is an excellent choice for both beginners and experienced growers. It is fast-growing, low-maintenance, and produces stunning deep red, trumpet-shaped flowers that bloom during the day. These large blooms are especially impressive given the cactus’s small size, making it a true showpiece in any succulent or cactus collection.
Perfect for bright indoor spots like windowsills, desktops, or shelves, this cactus also thrives outdoors in containers or garden beds in warm, dry climates. Its small size—typically growing up to 5 cm tall and 6 cm wide—makes it ideal for compact spaces or mixed succulent arrangements. Like many cacti, it helps improve air quality and brings a touch of nature indoors, promoting a calm, low-stress atmosphere.
