Description:

Gymnocalycium bruchii is a miniature clumping cactus that has a beautiful ball-shaped that is colourful and highly decorative. Stems are flattened, blue and forest green, thick growing up to 4 cm in diameter, 6 cm long. Each areole features spines that bend as they grow, giving them a wavy shape.

This is one of the most cold-tolerant South American species. It can grow outdoors and is hardy to -15° C or less.

Flowers are an unusual shade of lavender-white, bell-shaped or funnel-shaped, that bloom in spring. Blooming occurs freely when plant is young and almost continuously during the year and blossoms at least for twelve days, followed by green fruits.

It looks perfect in a pot or on a window-sill. The spines are nearly useless in terms of defense so a pretty 'user-friendly' plant.

Care Guide

Light
Light shade. It may tolerate bright situations but is likely to suffer from sun scorch or stunted growth if over exposed to direct sunlight. Indoors, place it in the sunniest spot, preferably a west- or south-facing window. Reputedly very resistant to frost if kept on the dry side prior to, and during, cold weather (hardy to -15 C ° C, or less for short periods).

Water
During the growing season, which is typically spring and summer, you can water your ball cactus every 2-3 weeks. In contrast, during the dormant period in winter, you'll want to reduce watering to once every 4-6 weeks.

Soil
Very airy, sandy soil that drains well.
