Description:

Gymnocalycium damsii var. rotundulum (Gymnocalycium anisitsii), known as spider cacti is a beautiful ball-shaped that is colourful and highly decorative. This plant is a hybrid, it has been cultivated for a long time, and has been selected for its hypnotic uniqueness. It looks perfect in a pot or on a window-sill.

The stem is round, with characteristic horizontal clear and dark strips. The clear areas (above the areoles) are pastel-grey-pink while the dark zone (below the areoles) are deep olive-green to brown-purple. The spines are nearly useless in terms of defence so a pretty 'user-friendly' plant.

Flowers are large, funnel-shaped and can have many different colours from white to pale pink to reddish purple. Blooming occurs freely when cacti is young and almost continuously during the year and blossoms least for twelve days.

Care Guide

Light
Light shade. It may tolerate bright situations but is likely to suffer from sun scorch or stunted growth if over exposed to direct sunlight. Indoors, place it in the sunniest spot, preferably a west- or south-facing window.

Water
It's best to follow the "soak and dry" method. This means thoroughly watering the plant until water drains out of the bottom of the pot and then allowing the soil to completely dry out before watering again. Never let your cactus sit in a dish of water.

During the growing season, which is typically spring and summer, you can water your ball cactus every 2-3 weeks. In contrast, during the dormant period in winter, you'll want to reduce watering to once every 4-6 weeks.

Soil
Very airy, sandy soil that drains well.
