Description:

Mammillaria bocasana is a clumping cactus, often forming large mounds. It is commonly called the “Powder Puff Cactus” because of its appearance, resembling a cotton ball as the small, round plant is covered with silky white hairs.

The plant’s spines are relatively soft, white, and can be woolly in appearance, giving it a fuzzy or cotton-like texture. The spines are usually not particularly sharp, which adds to the cactus’s charming and non-threatening appearance.

Flowers bloom in late spring to early summer and are a gorgeous soft, creamy to pale pink. The flowers are small but numerous, typically forming a ring around the plant's crown.

Mammillaria bocasana is a delightful and relatively low-maintenance cactus species, making it an excellent choice for both beginner and experienced cactus growers. Its soft, woolly appearance, beautiful pale pink flowers, and ability to thrive in a variety of settings make it a popular ornamental plant. With proper care, it will reward the grower with many years of enjoyment, offering both aesthetic beauty and the satisfaction of growing a resilient, drought-tolerant cactus.

Care Guide

Light
Mammillaria cacti thrive in full sun or bright indirect light. They require at least 4–6 hours of direct sunlight daily to grow optimally. High levels of light are needed to flower and for good spine development. Can be sunburned if moved from shade into full sun too quickly. If grown indoors, place them near a south or west-facing window where they can receive plenty of light.

Water
Water every 2–3 weeks in spring and summer, adjusting based on temperature and humidity. In the cooler months, water sparingly, about once every 4–6 weeks. Always allow the soil to dry completely between waterings and avoid letting the plant sit in water to prevent overwatering and root rot.

Soil
The plant requires well-drained soil, such as a mix of pumice, clay, and regular soil, to ensure proper drainage and prevent root rot. A perforated pot is ideal for allowing excess water to escape.
