MAMMILLARIA MARKSIANA
Habitat: Mexico
Description:
Mammillaria marksiana is a striking cactus species known for its vibrant green body, contrasting snow-white wool, sparse yellow spines, and bright yellowish-green flowers.
No other Mammillaria species approaches the intensity of green and yellow found in the M. marksiana. While it can form sizable clumps, it often remains solitary, typically reaching a diameter of up to 12 cm over time. Its distinctive feature is a dense covering of spines, ranging from white to yellow, creating a bold contrast against its green body. The spines are arranged in radial patterns around the tubercles, a hallmark of the Mammillaria genus.
During late winter to early spring, it blooms small, bell-shaped flowers that are bright yellowish green, adding to its ornamental appeal. The flowers emerge from the crown of the cactus, which looks like a halo. The flowers are not only beautiful but also attract pollinators, ensuring the continuation of the species.
