MAMMILLARIA SPINOSISSIMA 'UN PICO'
Habitat: Mexico
Description:
Mammillaria spinosissima 'Un Pico' is a unique genetic variant of Mammillaria spinosissima, characterized by its distinctive growth pattern where each areole produces a single spine, although some areoles may be completely spineless.
This sun-loving cactus is easy to grow and can reach up to 30 cm in height. It blooms profusely, even at a young age, making it a standout addition to any collection. Pink magenta, funnel-shaped flowers appear in a ring near the top of the plant in spring and sometimes again in summer.
Native to Mexico, the plant’s white, hooked spines were traditionally used as fish hooks. It also produces edible fruit that is safe for birds and non-toxic to humans, dogs, cats, and horses.
Mammillaria spinosissima 'Un Pico' is low-maintenance, requiring ample light without direct sun exposure to avoid burning, which encourages healthy spine growth. It’s an ideal starter plant, eventually forming a beautiful cluster with vibrant blooms. Water regularly during the summer, but be cautious not to overwater. In winter, allow the plant to remain dry with good airflow. It is frost-tolerant when kept dry.
