Description:

Mammillaria vetula subsp. gracilis, commonly known as the Thimble Cactus, is a small and visually appealing cactus perfect for both indoor and outdoor decor.

This distinctive cactus features rounded tubercles covered in delicate, lace-like white spines, with a few longer, dark-brown spines in the centre. In late spring or early summer, it produces small pink or red flowers at the apex, adding a beautiful touch to its appearance.

With a vibrant green body, the Thimble Cactus grows in compact clusters, often producing small offshoots that can easily fall off if touched. These offshoots can be replanted and will readily root if placed on the ground.

Typically reaching 15 cm in height and spreading up to 30 cm in width, this cactus remains small and manageable, making it ideal for limited spaces.

Drought-tolerant and low-maintenance, Mammillaria vetula subsp. gracilis is perfect for beginners. It thrives in bright, indirect light and is well-suited for pots or containers, making it an excellent choice for those looking to add a charming, easy-care cactus to their collection.

Care Guide

Light
Mammillaria cacti thrive in full sun or bright indirect light. They require at least 4–6 hours of direct sunlight daily to grow optimally. High levels of light are needed to flower and for good spine development. Can be sunburned if moved from shade into full sun too quickly. If grown indoors, place them near a south or west-facing window where they can receive plenty of light.

Water
Water every 2–3 weeks in spring and summer, adjusting based on temperature and humidity. In the cooler months, water sparingly, about once every 4–6 weeks. Always allow the soil to dry completely between waterings and avoid letting the plant sit in water to prevent overwatering and root rot.

Soil
The plant requires well-drained soil, such as a mix of pumice, clay, and regular soil, to ensure proper drainage and prevent root rot. A perforated pot is ideal for allowing excess water to escape.
