MATUCANA MADISONIORUM
Habit: Peru
Description:
Matucana madisoniorum is a rare and striking cactus native to the Andes Mountains in Peru. Known for its vibrant colours and unique shape, this mostly spineless cactus serves as an eye-catching addition to any plant collection. Its resilience makes it a great choice for both beginner and experienced gardeners.
This attractive dwarf cactus features ribs similar to those of Lophophora species, often resembling peyote cactus in appearance. It's generally easy to grow with protection from freezing temperatures. The plant's most notable feature is its rough-textured skin, which ranges in colour from blue to grey-green. The number of spines on this cactus is variable: in some species, there are a few or none at all; in others, there are quite many spines on the plant.
Matucana madisoniorum produces striking orange-red flowers that bloom at the top of the plant, often leaning to one side. These flowers have an almost fluorescent glow and begin as small, furry white or gray buds. The cactus blooms in several flushes throughout the summer and can flower year-round if given the right conditions. After blooming, the plant produces delicate, fragile fruits. As the fruits mature, they split open, releasing seeds that cascade down the sides of the plant.
This is a slow-growing plant that's easy to cultivate. Spines are nearly useless in terms of defence, making it a user-friendly plant.
