Description:

Neoporteria, or Eriocyse senilis, is a distinctive cactus known for its long, twisted, and thin creamy yellow spines, which resemble soft, flexible hair. These spines completely cover the plant, making it easily identifiable. It is a solitary, globular cactus with a dark green body that can transition to a cylindrical shape over time. While its striking deep purple colour is a standout feature, exposure to excessive shade may cause it to turn deep green.

This cactus is easy to grow, stays small, and is hardy and forgiving, making it simple to manage. Throughout spring and summer, it produces brilliant flowers, ranging from deep neon pink to pale pink with a yellow centre.

Care Guide

Light
Thrive in full sun or bright indirect light. They require at least 4–6 hours of direct sunlight daily to grow optimally. High levels of light are needed to flower and for good spine development. Can be sunburned if moved from shade into full sun too quickly. If grown indoors, place them near a south or west-facing window where they can receive plenty of light.

Water
Water every 2–3 weeks in spring and summer, adjusting based on temperature and humidity. In the cooler months, water sparingly, about once every 4–6 weeks. Always allow the soil to dry completely between waterings and avoid letting the plant sit in water to prevent overwatering and root rot.

Soil
The plant requires well-drained soil, such as a mix of pumice, clay, and regular soil, to ensure proper drainage and prevent root rot. A perforated pot is ideal for allowing excess water to escape.
