PARODIA MAIRANANA
Habitat: Bolivia
Description:
Parodia mairanana, commonly known as the "Red Tom Thumb," is a hardy cactus native to the high altitudes of Mairana, Bolivia. This cold-tolerant species thrives in cooler climates and is easy to grow. Its distinctive globular shape, vibrant green body, and pale white areoles set it apart from other cacti. The plant features two types of spines: thin, straight, light-coloured radial spines, and thicker, darker, hooked central spines.
During spring and summer, Parodia mairanana produces striking red flowers at its crown. These open-faced blooms attract pollinators like bees and butterflies, adding a burst of colour and energy to the environment. Though slow-growing, the cactus can form clusters when grown under optimal conditions. After flowering, it produces small, dry, papery fruits.
With its compact size and unique appearance, Parodia mairanana is ideal for decorative pots, windowsills, or rock gardens. Whether you’re a seasoned gardener or a beginner, this cactus makes a perfect addition to both indoor and outdoor spaces, offering charm and adaptability to your home or garden.
