SINOCRASSULA YUNNANENSIS
Habitat: China
Description:
Sinocrassula yunnanensis, also known as Chinese Jade, or the charming “Hedgehog Succulent,” is a rare succulent known for its dramatic, near-black foliage.
Native to China, this compact succulent forms dense, ball-shaped rosettes of rough, pointed leaves that are covered in tiny textures that scatter light, giving the plant a dark, matte, almost metallic look. When grown in bright sun, the foliage deepens from silvery green to deep charcoal or near-black, making it one of the darkest succulents commonly grown. The plant stays compact and low, slowly forming tight, hedgehog-like clusters that spread by offsets over time.
Flowering is another fascinating feature: each rosette blooms only once, sending up deep red stems topped with tiny white flowers accented by red sepals. After flowering, that rosette dies back, but the plant lives on through its offsets, gradually forming a larger clump. This growth cycle makes mature specimens especially interesting and rewarding to grow.
