Sulcorebutia arenacea renowned for its perfectly neat, precise, symmetrical form and unique spines that resemble small insects. Sulcorebutia cacti are popular for their large colourful flowers that open widely during the day and last for several days. Well-grown plants often flower in mass, the flower sometimes completely covering the plant and producing a spectacular display. This plant produces vibrant yellow-orange flowers that bloom throughout summer.

Generally easy to grow and relatively fast, these cacti do best in a container. Repot annually when young, then every two years. It is important to be cautious with watering, as its thick taproots are susceptible to overwatering and rot. To encourage blooming, it is recommended to allow a cold resting period, which will prompt the plant to produce flowers in late winter through spring.

Care Guide

Light
Thrive in full sun or bright indirect light. They require at least 4–6 hours of direct sunlight daily to grow optimally. High levels of light are needed to flower and for good spine development. Can be sunburned if moved from shade into full sun too quickly. If grown indoors, place them near a south or west-facing window where they can receive plenty of light.

Water
It is important to be cautious with watering, as its thick taproots are susceptible to overwatering and rot.

During the growing season, which is typically spring and summer, you can water your cactus every 2-3 weeks. In contrast, during the dormant period in winter, it is necessary to completely suspend watering, as the plant is very sensitive to rotting.

Soil
A well-draining and mineral-rich soil is an optimal solution. It's even better to add one layer of sand at the bottom of the pot, as it helps to avoid rotting.
