SEMPERVIVUM PEKINESE
Habitat: North Africa and Europe
Description:
Sempervivum 'Pekinese' is a compact, prolific variety with fine silvery-white webbing. Its colour transitions from light green to soft pink throughout the year. In spring, it produces numerous tiny offsets, eventually forming a neat, mounding clump.
Sempervivum flowers can be reddish, yellowish, pinkish, and occasionally whitish. In Sempervivum, the flowers are actinomorphic (like a star) and have more than six petals. After flowering, the plant dies, but it usually leaves behind numerous offsets produced during its life.
This plant requires ample outdoor sunlight to display their best colours and maintain a compact rosette shape. They thrive in gritty, well-draining soil and containers with drainage holes. Sempervivum grow primarily in spring and summer, benefiting from weekly watering and some afternoon shade when temperatures are high. Exceptionally frost-hardy, they can withstand winter under a protective layer of snow. To prevent rot, protect them from heavy rain and standing water.
Sempervivums also make suitable plants for containers, and do well in breathable terracotta, concrete, and cement pots. They have also been known to grow in rock crevices, metal containers, succulent wreaths, roof shingles, and anywhere else that allows adequate root drainage.
