SEMPERVIVUM 'RASBERRY ICE'
Habitat: Nursery cultivated
Description:
Sempervivum 'Rasberry Ice' features velvety red and green rosettes with a frosty look. As a hybrid of S. arachnoideum tomentosum, it boasts thick tufts. The rosettes can grow quite large, forming dense, striking clusters. Sempervivum flowers can be reddish, yellowish, pinkish, and occasionally whitish. In Sempervivum, the flowers are actinomorphic (like a star) and have more than six petals. After flowering, the plant dies, but it usually leaves behind numerous offsets produced during its life.
This plant thrives in ample outdoor sunlight but not direct sun, which helps it maintain vibrant colours and a compact rosette shape. It prefers gritty, well-draining soil and containers with drainage holes. Sempervivum grows mainly in spring and summer, benefiting from weekly watering and some afternoon shade during high temperatures. Highly frost-hardy, it can survive winter beneath a protective layer of snow. To avoid rot, ensure they are shielded from heavy rain and standing water.
Sempervivums also make suitable plants for containers, and do well in breathable terracotta and cement pots. They have also been known to grow in rock crevices, metal containers, succulent wreaths, roof shingles, and anywhere else that allows adequate root drainage.
