Description:

The monstrose form of Trichocereus bridgesii (TBM), often known as the “penis cactus,” is distinctive due to its irregular and distorted growth. It frequently appears as lumpy, knobby, or otherwise abnormal cacti. ‘Monstrose’ cacti are fascinating for their unique growth pattern and are sought after by collectors and enthusiasts due to their intriguing and unique appearances. They are typically cultivated for their ornamental value and the curiosity surrounding their bizarre growth patterns. However, they are less common in cultivation compared to the typical columnar or cylindrical cacti.

Light green stems branch out, creating new suckers from spiny areoles. At the base it has sparse spines that disappear as the plant grows, showing a smooth, hairless stem with an indentation at the apex.

It is very easy to grow and cold hardy as low as -12°C (or less). This cultivar seems to do better with a little more water than most cacti. In fact, its cultivation requirements are really more like 'normal' plants than most other cacti. During the growing season fertilize them with a specialised cacti fertilizer.

Care Guide

Light
Outdoors, these cacti thrive in full sun, though during very hot summers they benefit from light shade to prevent sunburn. Indoors, they need bright light with at least some direct sunlight each day. In winter, move them to a cool area and induce dormancy by withholding water and fertilizer—without enough light, they may stretch or thin out.

Water
Moderately water and only when the soil is completely dry. It is enough to water it once a week in spring and summer, reduce it to once every two months in autumn and suspend it completely in winter. They’re somewhat prone to fungal diseases if overwatered: during warm weather, water moderately and allow the soil to dry between waterings, but in cooler periods keep them dry—any dampness in cold conditions often leads to black rot or worse.
